On June 15th, a ten-person delegation of the Seoul Bar Association headed by Hyeon-seong Kim, visited CIETAC, and held discussions with Secretary General Wang Chengjie and other staff members of CIETAC about the arbitration practice of China and CIETAC and the development of arbitration in South Korea.
Secretary General Wang Chengjie first welcomed the visit of the delegation. He briefed on CIETAC¡¯s history, recent caseload, international communication and cooperation, rules updates and institution development. He pointed out that with 60 years of development, CIETAC has become increasingly internationalized, and the credibility of CIETAC¡¯s awards has been widely recognized by the international community.
General Counsel Mr. Kim expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and introduction by Secretary General Wang Chengjie. He fully acknowledged that Chinese legal profession has attached greater importance to arbitration as a dispute resolution method, and recognized the achievements CIETAC has made in its management of arbitration cases, and praised that CIETAC has organized many big events to promote arbitration and train international arbitration talents. He also shared the latest arbitration development in South Korea, emphasized the increasing focus on parties¡¯ autonomy and hoped that more and more Korean lawyers would participate in Chinese arbitration.
During the discussion, representatives of CIETAC and members of the visiting delegation conducted in-depth conversations on issues such as the determination of the nationality of presiding arbitrator, the selection criteria of foreign arbitrators, CIETAC¡¯s practice of combination of arbitration and mediation, the relationship between arbitration and litigation and their costs. The discussions have further strengthened the understanding of the legal profession of South Korea about Chinese and CIETAC arbitration, and provided a better foundation for broader communication and cooperation between the Chinese and Korean legal professions and arbitration communities.
